Zakat Not Obligatory
Your net zakatable wealth is below the Nisab threshold. Zakat is not obligatory for you this year. However, voluntary Sadaqah (charity) is always encouraged and rewarded by Allah ﷻ. May Allah increase your wealth and blessings. Ameen.
Understanding Zakat
🕌 What is Zakat?
Zakat is the Third Pillar of Islam. It is an obligatory annual charity of 2.5% on wealth held above the Nisab threshold for one full lunar year (Hawl). It purifies wealth and helps the poor.
⚖️ What is Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold for Zakat to be obligatory. It equals the value of 87.48g of gold OR 612.36g of silver. Most scholars recommend using silver Nisab as it is more inclusive.
📅 What is Hawl?
Hawl is the lunar year cycle. Your wealth must have remained above Nisab for a complete Islamic lunar year (354 days) before Zakat becomes due. Many Muslims calculate on Ramadan annually.
💍 Is Jewellery Zakatable?
According to the Hanafi madhab, all gold and silver jewellery is zakatable. Shafi'i and Maliki schools say jewellery used for personal wear is exempt. Include it if you follow Hanafi fiqh.
🏠 Is Property Zakatable?
Property you live in is NOT zakatable. Rental income is zakatable once received. Property bought specifically for resale (investment property) IS zakatable at current market value.
👥 Who Receives Zakat?
Allah ﷻ defined 8 categories in Quran 9:60: The poor · The needy · Zakat administrators · Those whose hearts are to be reconciled · Freeing captives · The indebted · In the cause of Allah · The wayfarer.
Do I pay Zakat on money I owe to others? ▼
Money you owe (debts) can be deducted from your zakatable wealth. Only short-term debts due within the year are generally deductible. Long-term mortgage payments are usually not fully deductible — consult a scholar.
Is Zakat on salary paid monthly or annually? ▼
Technically Zakat is calculated annually on your total savings. Many working Muslims prefer to calculate their Zakat once a year on a fixed date (e.g. 1st Ramadan) on all wealth accumulated above Nisab.
Is cryptocurrency zakatable in Islam? ▼
Many contemporary Islamic scholars consider cryptocurrency to be zakatable as it represents tradeable wealth with monetary value. Calculate at current market value on your Zakat date. Consult your local scholar for the ruling you follow.
Can I give Zakat to my own family? ▼
You cannot give Zakat to your spouse, parents, grandparents, or children — as you are responsible for their maintenance. However, you can give Zakat to siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives who are eligible.
What if I missed Zakat for previous years? ▼
You should make up missed Zakat from previous years as soon as possible. Calculate what you owed each year and pay it. It is a debt upon your wealth that must be fulfilled. Ask Allah ﷻ for forgiveness.
