03Frequently Asked Questions
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a useful general screening tool but doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition. Athletes and very muscular people may show a "high" BMI despite low body fat. It's a starting point, not a diagnosis.
What is BMR vs TDEE?
BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the calories your body burns at complete rest just to function. TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) adds your activity level on top of BMR — it's your actual daily calorie burn.
How many calories should I cut to lose weight?
A common, sustainable approach is a 500 kcal/day deficit below your TDEE, which targets roughly 0.5 kg (about 1 lb) of weight loss per week. Very large deficits can be harder to sustain and may affect muscle mass and energy levels.
How many calories should I add to gain weight?
A common approach is a 300–500 kcal/day surplus above TDEE, combined with resistance training, to gain weight gradually as lean mass rather than mostly fat.
Is this calculator a substitute for medical advice?
No. This tool gives general estimates for healthy adults. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant, underweight, or have specific health goals, consult a doctor or registered dietitian before making changes to your diet.
